Chapter Eleven
A cute young high school girl in a black striped smock leaned against the counter and greeted Carmen. “Welcome to Spartan Bakery. What can I get for you tonight?”
“I’m here for the classes.” Carmen kept moving, afraid if she stopped, she’d change her mind. “Thank you.”
A warning voice screamed in her head. She shouldn’t be here. Shouldn’t be involved in the buddy system. Shouldn’t be involved with Gin. At all. But she liked Gin. That was the problem. She shouldn’t like her. Gin couldn’t stand Carmen. That bothered her the most. The fact that someone couldn’t stand her for reasons all their own.
Mentally arguing with herself, Carmen deliberately put one foot in front of the other until she entered the back room. Eight waist-high tables in two rows of four lined the center of the room.
She spotted Gin on the front row, facing away from the door. Wearing a mosaic print sundress with the back cut out to the curve of her waist, her hair twisted into a loose French braid that cascaded over one sensual shoulder, she was the epitome of class and sex appeal.
But Carmen knew she was anything but those things. She was hellfire and hard. She was soft with a sharp tongue. Yet, in the vortex of non trust, was a trusting soul. A bruised soul. And she didn’t like people. Gin never played well with strangers.
Carmen wanted to play again. Just once. And then she wanted to leave Gin right where she’d found her. Pissed at the world, wearing blinders but searching for the light at the end of the tunnel.
Without waiting for instructions, she took the empty table directly behind Gin and her date. To her right was a biracial couple who were already discussing food coloring and icing tips. In front of them was a woman who had her items organized perfectly across the table from large to small. To her left, a very tall man wearing black-rimmed glasses stared straight ahead, intently listening to the instructions already underway.
The remaining tables were empty.
Minutes later, Steph and Phil took the table to the far back left.
Carmen couldn’t tear her sights away from the indention of Gin’s dress, where it caressed the curve of her hips, dangerously close to the slit of her ass cheeks. Where she wanted to put her hands, her mouth, her breath.
Gin’s date stood a good foot above her. Dark hair, broad shoulders, and pale blue eyes that hadn’t left Gin from the second Carmen walked into this room.
“The inner tip fits into the bag, like such,” the female instructor continued. “And the metal tip pushes onto the outside, like so.”
Gin’s date attempted to follow directions before dropping the bag, dropping the tip, and cackling at her clumsy fingers. “I swear I’ve done this before. I’m just so nervous this close to you. You’re stunning.”
Yes, she was. The words, packed with such meaning and intention, made Carmen’s jaw clench. She wanted to say those words to Gin. She wanted to tell her how beautiful she was tonight.
